Founded by Swedish settlers in 1860, Augustana College is a selective college of the liberal arts and sciences, affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Augustana's campus in Rock Island, Illinois, faces the Mississippi River where it runs through the Illinois-Iowa Quad Cities. Wooded hills, green lawns and a pond provide a quiet central campus, while just beyond is the draw of an active cultural center. With a population totaling 400,000, the Quad Cities is the largest metropolitan area between Des Moines and Chicago. Augustana's student population of 2,500 represents a wide variety of cultural, ethnic, geographic and social backgrounds. The college offers more than 90 majors, pre-professional programs and related areas of study, and has more than 150 student organizations. Sixth in the nation for number of Academic All-Americans, the Augustana Vikings have 25 varsity teams and 24 club sports, including crew, hockey, and equestrian. Through Augie Choice, each student can receive up to $2,000 to support a high-impact learning experience such as international study, research or an internship. With the close focus of faculty mentors in a rich liberal arts environment, Augustana students are educated for meaningful lives in a complex worldand 98% are engaged in full-time jobs or graduate programs shortly after graduating.
