Defiance is a college where students learn to lead and serve in a democracy; learn to understand, appreciate, and have the skills to interact with other cultures; and learn to not only receive knowledge but to make their own knowledge by engaging in interactive experiences. Building on a strong foundation of more than a century of educating citizens for lives of leadership and service, Defiance College provides opportunities for its students to make a meaningful impact on society in the twenty-first century with an educational experience of engagement. As a small, independent college, its size enables it to foster a close-knit culture of engaged learning that is central to its institutional vision.

Students can have hands-on experiences in their field of study through quality internships, domestic and international travel, diverse cultural encounters, and distinctive service and research opportunities for personal and professional growth.

This culture of engagement is demonstrated through innovative programming such as the recently developed program called Jacket Journey. This program focuses on career readiness, urging students to think about their career from orientation through graduation. With a foundation in the liberal arts, Jacket Journey connects classroom and campus experiences with the current needs of the workforce to engage students in the development of soft skills and 21st-century workplace competency. The Jacket Journey will provide Defiance College graduates the ability to properly articulate their value to employers immediately upon graduation and for the rest of their careers. Students can have hands-on experiences in their field of study through quality internships, domestic and international travel, diverse cultural encounters, and distinctive service and research opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Defiance College?s mission, unwavering for more than 150 years, has helped give it a distinguished history as an institution concerned with hearts and minds in equal measure. Providing students with rigorous academic programming and distinctive and dynamic service learning experiences, Defiance College is recognized as a leader in using ever-changing student-centered approaches to lifelong learning. Defiance College emphasizes learning based on the four pillars of our educational philosophy: to know, to understand, to lead, and to serve.

The institution fulfills its mission by providing a strong liberal arts education that shapes resilient minds through its emphasis on leadership, communication skills, critical thinking, moral reasoning, global awareness, and respect for diversity. Outstanding professional preparation meets a culture of engagement ? the blend gives students the chance to do the work of their future careers in communities across town and across oceans.
